Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.
This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is located around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
He is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
