Guitar Hero Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected Generations Between Music Fans

Marking 20 years after the legendary game debuted across the Atlantic, offering players everywhere the tools to become a rock star. Not literally, though you'd be hard-pressed convincing anyone who has nailed the epic lengthy guitar solo in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by the developers, the game provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues moving along the screen in time with the music. Every sequence corresponded to particular chords, creating the sensation of a genuine performance.

The studio previously experimented in the music genre prior to teaming up with the publisher, later purchased by Activision in 2006. Together, they established the foundations for an unlikely massively profitable series that had a remarkable impact for many musicians featured, showcasing decades-old groups to a new generation of younger players.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, remembers the initial financial challenges of licensing the songs – despite the fact initial releases primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced every song because the dollar figure prohibitive,” he explains. “Even with the publishing rights by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We couldn’t get acts such as legendary groups – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was pretty convinced the project would flop. However, when Guitar Hero became a hit, album purchases airtime increased, all artists desired to be in.”

He continues: “One of the amazing things was how many parents reached out and thanked us for exposing their children to the songs they loved. It evolved into an intergenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish blues-rock band one featured act had Never Too Late on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist Paul Mahon recalls how the series revived older hits to the forefront: “Guitar Hero offered a larger, younger audience. Generally such music was seen as outdated material, however when it was included in the game young people were finding it, suddenly it became trendy. That legitimised the genre, eliminating the outdated tag. It provided our catalog a new life.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record was still unreleased in the US, so the game served as a primary platform for exposure for the group as they went on US tour supporting the rock giants. “Their crew had on the song during travel, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Major Band Spin-offs Enduring Influence

Music's heavyweight names soon took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in dedicated spin-off titles centered around their music collections and associated stories, visuals and legendary status. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly earned the group greater revenue compared to their records. It moved well over half a million units in its first week, and sales of their songs rose of up to 40% at a time as the industry was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered fanaticism among its fans. Earlier this year, an online personality achieved an impressive attempt featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem popularized through the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical gameplay but an array of customisation options. The song is challenging even in expert mode, not to mention performed at double speed and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. They claimed requiring months of practice of practice.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. Just as with other games, that doesn’t mean you ought to pick up actual weapons and go to war,” says DragonForce guitarist the artist.

DragonForce had already completed a profitable run when Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, yet he explains it made them a household name. “I remember the record label informing us that we were records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we performed just before top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility via the game proved so vast that it has threatened to eclipsing everything else the band has done. Last year, the song featured in a trailer for a major film. “In the past I felt differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only hear a single track, that's fine – each person has a unique musical journey and I’m glad we played a role in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Legacy of a Plastic Guitar

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or games, goes further mere transactions – it inspires a desire. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of being a rock star on the stage. From day one, the creators felt that humans have a natural urge to create songs, and their goal was to leverage innovation to enable everyone to participate”.

Most installments were released in just a five-year period between 2005 and 2010, including derivative titles such as DJ Hero, complete with a spinning deck, and Band Hero. After that, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments died down, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Games like the fan project and newer releases have kept the community alive, with expectations of something from the founders on the way. A new studio has begun production on its debut music game. Original co-founders are both involved in advisory roles. Is the world ready to embrace another game in the spirit of the classic?

“Our team believed those games might become like Madden allowing annual update every year,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music it could remain evergreen, thus I remain optimistic. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue for future fans.”
