The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
