RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
